Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Recording That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in military or security roles.

"As we did, you all swore an vow to protect and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our constitution."

The Former President's Incensed Reaction

The video message seemed to prompt a heated reaction from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified announcement censuring the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our United States with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical digital publications and recant his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.

Officials' Defiant Answer

The officials who participated in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this United States and swore an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "All citizens must unite and condemn the former president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."

More Political Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the death of public representatives."

He added: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and unconditionally."

The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that is historic in American history."

The GOP official also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

White House Statement

During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson said. "There are active officials of the federal government who worked together to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to defy the president's proper directives."

She stated: "The sanctity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
