An Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, reasoning I could pass the night in an establishment operating through the night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for acing the admissions interview the following day, but as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused since a female student spotted me wandering around the city and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: one filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and a secure location to rest to spend the night.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she did that – and remain very grateful.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish life has returned her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
