Abigail Spanberger Establishes History as First Female State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has had 74 governors, all of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger shattered this historic barrier by being elected as the first female governor in Virginia's annals.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Targeted Criticism

The former US representative and Central Intelligence Agency case officer won with a campaign that stressed economic pressures and deliberately opposed the former president's agenda instead of the individual.

Early Life and Education

Born in a New Jersey town on 7 August 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently worked in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She attended the UVA, obtaining a diploma in French literature. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before turning to a life of service.

“I grew up believing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she informed attendees at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she worked cases involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She served legal orders, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and concentrated on anti-terror efforts, working covertly and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, faced a decision. Living on the west coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a globe and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “family and friends lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a federal career, to state involvement because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she joined an advocacy organization, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which people told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in half a century.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was dividing communities. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to take action. So spoiler: I won.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she rapidly became associated with the moderate Democrats, a collection of centrist and fiscally moderate Democrats. She focused on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for partnering with opposing parties and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated moderate voters, warning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in tight races.

Political Alliance

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the progressive “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Run for Governor

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her platform focused on themes of civic duty, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her federal service lent her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation instead of a career.

Election Victory

This helped her to overcome rival candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an extremist on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

The governor-elect, who consistently argued that individual districts should decide whether transgender students can join competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
